Polls Show Democrats Poised to Make Gains Ahead of Midterm Elections

Recent polls and reporting from CBS News, NPR and The Hill indicate Democrats are positioned to gain ground in the midterm elections, though the outlets differ on the size of those gains.

President Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama made their rounds across the U.S. ahead of the midterm elections, CBS News reported, and a new CBS News poll found that Democrats are "on track to take control" of the House of Representatives. CBS News contributor Kyle Kondik has more on the findings, the network said.

NPR reported that Democrats hold significant advantages going into Election Day, according to a new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll. Its report, written by Domenico Montanaro, carries the headline Democrats still poised to make gains, but poll shows warning signs, and says lagging enthusiasm among key groups is one indicator that gains may not come easy.

The Hill reported that Democratic candidates, policymakers and outside groups agree on one point: "Something needs to be done on childcare." In a report by Helen Huiskes, The Hill said that should Democrats win a majority in Congress in November, their affordability agenda includes childcare among the everyday costs they want to bring down.

CBS News, NPR and The Hill each framed the Democratic position differently, the reports show. CBS News emphasized House control, NPR emphasized warning signs about how large the gains may be, and The Hill emphasized a childcare agenda tied to a possible majority. None of the three summaries cited in these reports gives a specific number of seats.
