Fox News reported that the Miami Hurricanes claimed the No. 1 spot in the first College Football Playoff rankings, which the outlet described as the first official release. According to a Fox News report, Georgia, Utah, Indiana and Alabama rounded out the top five, with Indiana cracking that group.

Earlier, ABC News had reported that Miami was a good bet for the top position. In an ABC News report, the outlet said the undefeated Hurricanes were hard to deny as a team that deserves top seeding when the College Football Playoff selection committee releases its first set of rankings for the season. The headline of that report asked "but then what?"

The two reports differ on timing. ABC News framed the committee's first rankings as a future event, while Fox News reported that the rankings had already been released. The summaries provided do not describe how the rankings were compiled, and they do not give a time for the release.

Both reports place Miami at the top of the discussion, though only ABC News addressed the team's record, describing it as undefeated. Fox News's summary named the top five teams in order and did not describe any team's record.
